The construction and renovation of sustainable buildings is a necessity to fight against global warming. Nevertheless, the implementation of ecological materials and high-performance equipments does not guarantee the achievement of environmental performance objectives. This is due to the dominant culture of work organization which is based on a vertical logic limiting skills to a job without a global vision. This lack of collaboration has harmful consequences on the quality of a building and its environmental impact.

What has to change?

We need to revolutionize the organization of a project by creating links of interdependence, and common responsibility between the actors in equal working relationships. It is the key to stimulate collaboration by integrating a common culture of the global approach to a building. This approach takes into account the role of each actor: project owner, architect, trades, manufacturers, suppliers, inhabitants.

How can we act?

  • By Calculating the global cost of the operation by integrating tools that facilitate collaboration (BIM, LEAN management, common living spaces).
  • Communicating upstream of the worksite phase on the project owner’s objectives, the performance to be achieved, the materials chosen: guaranteeing everyone’s understanding in order to encourage collaboration.
  • Promoting multi-trade professional situations
  • Choosing local companies to promote networking between craftsmen

Integrating this importance of collaboration into training will be all the more effective in ensuring the paradigm shift. This can be done through the elaboration of common pedagogical projects between different schools (architects, engineer, carpenter, heating installer) cf. an example of innovative pedagogy in the article about the expertise construction
